Hi Belinda,
Your spasms and infections may be caused by the type and size of catheter that was used. Make sure that it is the correct size and material for long term use. I am a partially (urine) incontinent male who spent 9 days in the hospital last year for unrelated surgery. The nurses decided that it would be "better for me" if they just left in place the Foley catheter that been installed for the surgery. (I suspect it was motivated by them not wanting to do diaper changing.) Shortly after I woke up I began to experience painful bladder spasms that wouldn't stop. It took two days to finally get it removed when I complained to my own Dr.. He told me that the Foley that had been put in place for surgery was a size 20 with a large balloon and was not intended to be left in place after surgery. Unfortunately, I got a bad UTI and had to stay in the hospital for at least two extra days. Fortunately, by day four, I was able to change my own diapers.
