Colin has written some interesting and helpful articles on the subject of bedwetting, and he's always extremely compassionate. One such article discusses whether, if everything else has failed, a child or teen should be made to wear diapers to bed to ameliorate the problem, even if they don't want...

In our house there are 2 bedwetters and cloth diapers and plastic pants are worn by both.  As parents it is necessary that the use of bedwetting protection be discussed with the bedwetter both before starting to use it and at times again while using it.  This reinforces their feelings about themselves and helps greatly with self esteem.  We usually listen to the child if they have anything to say about having diapers on and talk it out with them right then.  It is our experience that his usually happens right after they have been put on or as things are being made ready to be put on.

As for keeping it quiet.  It is hard but it requires that other siblings be told that this is not something to be discussed with friends or outside of the house.  This point should be reinforced with the siblings from time to time.   As for siblings seeing the child with diapers and plastic pants on, it is next to impossible to prevent and so it must be explained that they are not to tease or make fun of the child in any way.

As for keeping things out of sight around the house, as a parent I feel it is important that these things be taken care of.  The plastic pants are washed and hung to dry in the laundry room and the door is closed during that time when the diapers and plastic pants are dry they are put into the diaper drawer and out of sight.

Constant reinforcement of the bedwetters comfort is important and they should know that when they have the diapers and plastic pants on they can go where ever in the house they want and do what they want.  In the colder weather they are encouraged to put pj's on over the plastic pants.  In the warmer weather it is okay to be in the house with the plastic pants on until going to bed.

SOMETIMES YOU GOT TO TELL A CHILD IT IS NO BIG DEAL YOU NEED DIAPERS AT NIGHT , MAYBE YOU CAN WEAR A DIAPER IN FRONT OF THEM TO SHOW THEM THAT YOU CAN NOT HELP SLEEPING HEAVY THUS YOU WET AT NIGHT OTHER SLEEP LIGHTLY AND CAN MAKE IT TO THE RESTROOM , THEY SOULD NOT WORRY ABOUT IT.

WHY DON'T YOU PUT THEM IN DISPOSABLES SO YOU CAN JUST THROW THEM AWAY, THAT IS WHAT I USE. IT IS EXPENSIVE BUT LESS NOTICEABLE. I HAVE TO GO TO WORK WEARING THEM UNDER MY JEANS.

Being "made to wear diapers to bed to ameliorate the problem," or any other form of diaper discipline is abuse. It is humiliating to the child. It can cause intimacy issues which leads to many more devastating problems later in life. Put a plastic cover on the mattress if it's worth that much to you. As discreetly as possible get medication to help with the problem. I'm telling you from experience this has dire consequences later in life. PLEASE do not diaper discipline your children.
