Q: Can phenytoin cause nocturia?

My 86 year old Mother has been having problems with Nocturia. She is getting up ten to twelve times a night to urinate.  I have just noticed that phenytoin can cause Nocturia.  She has been on this for two months.  Could this be causing her problem She takes two a day.

Hi Nancy,

Thank you for your question! This information on phenytoin states that extreme thirst and urinary frequency can be a serious side effect and should be reported to the doctor immediately. If you mother's problems started about the same time that she started the phenytoin, it is possible that the two are related. I would recommend telling her doctor what's going on, and see if there's something else that she could try.

Best of luck,

Casey
