Q: I am 91 years old and have been on Flomax for 6 years. Can I get off of it safely?

I am 91 years old and have been taking Flomax for 6 years.  It doesn't seem to help me anymore.  I'm still needing to go alot and getting up in the middle of the night 4 or 5 times.  My flow is the same, no problems there.  Too expensive to keep on taking it.  is there a generic  and if so what is it?  Can I safely quit taking it and what are the side effects that I  can expect after being on this drug for so long?

Hi Mel,

Thank you for your question! Unfortunately, there is not a generic form of Flomax available. If you would like to stop taking the Flomax, I would recommend talking to your doctor. You may need to slowly discontinue the dose, but that regimen would depend on how you're currently taking it. Some people take Flomax twice daily, some only once, so the discontinuation is different for everyone. Your doctor cannot force you to take a medication that you don't want to take, so tell him or her that you would like to stop it, and ask what is the best way to do so.

Best of luck to you!

Casey
