Q: Prolift mesh used for bladder prolapse, did anyone else have the mesh erode and cause pain?

I had the prolift system place anteriorly in my vagina 8 wks ago for a stage 3 cystocel. It has been a very rough recovery. I started having alot of pain and went back to my Dr. he said some of the mesh is eroding through my vagina and it feels prickly. He plans to have me use estrogen cream to build up the vagina tissue and if that doesn't help he wants to excise the exposed mesh and cover it with more of my vaginal tissue. I am 49 yrs old and am so tired of this. What should I do? Does the estrogen vaginal cream work for anyone. I cried myself to sleep last night. It is Christmas time and I can't enjoy it with my family, I am so uncomfortable.

My advice would be to go to www.apta.org and find a women's health PT in your area.  Not necessarily for treatment at this point, but more for direction on where they recommend you should go.  They will have developed relationships with the urogynocologists in your area.  Also, www.prolapsehealth.com is a good supportive sight with women sharing their experiences with prolapse and various treatment strategies.

My best to you,

I am dealing with the same problems.  I close to two years post surgery but I began having problems nearly the same time frame as you.  I have had hematomas that have had to be drained, constant UTI's, kidney infections, a neuroma on the scar site that had to be excised, and abraided mesh that had to be surgically removed.  Now, I'm lookin into the possibilty of having the whole mess taken out.  It has definitely ruined my quality of life.  I haven't had relations with my husband in over two years.  I am in constant pain and treated by a pain management specialist.  I do not sit our stand or walk without thinking about this disaster.  I began this whole process when my second daughter could barely walk and now she's learning her letters in preschool.  It makes me sad and sick and terrified that I'll feel this way forever.  The cream seems like a kiss off to me.  I'd get a second opinion and not waste a second.

Dear Susan and Asalazara,

I'm very curieus how you're doing nowadays. Are you feeling better? Did you use the cream and did it help? I had a Prolift Mesh posterior placed in 2008. My life has never been the same since that day. I had to undergo three more operations - two to get the mesh out and one to pul up my colon - but I'm still suffering a lot of pain, and a visit to the toilet is a torture. The pelvic floor area hurts all day long, I can't sleep properly and I am not able to work, sport, dance, have sex or more. I live in Holland. Where do you live and hat have you been doing up to now to get these horrible problems solved?

Hope to hear from you soon!
