working while managing incontinence
When I tried to return to work full-time at a retirement home as a laundry aid I had a few problems at first managing my urinary incontinence. I had to ask my supervisor at work if I could leave early twice now over the past month.
When I came back to work the next day I was called into the front office and the I got a write-up leaving early. I explained to her that it was do to my bladder control problem and that my diapers were wet and leaking so I had to change them. Later that day I was dismissed from my job for not putting down on my application for employment that I was disabled by urinary incontinence!!!
I wasnt aware that I had to discuss this problem with employers, I dont know What to do now. Am I to put this down as a disability on applications or was my supervisor wrong on this matter.
Has any others lost their jobs due to having to wear diapers to work. And Im not sure anyone would give me a chance to work for them if they knew I had this problem!
I would think if you were up front with an employer about this at they would work with you on this. I would suggest that you carry a back pack or some type of bag to carry extra diapers & least one extra change of clothes with you to work. I carry a back pack to and from my work. I work as maintenance man for a private school so I blend in because several of our teachers carry back packs. I keep an extra change of clothes in mine becuase my bladder & due to my work if I need to change. I hope this helps & would encourage to get back into the work force

I don't know the laws in this area, but it would seem to me to be out of line for an employer to fire you for failing to share personal medical information. That should be private and confidential.
However, there are things you can do to minimize the impact that the incontinence will have on your job performance. I believe that there are laws dictating how often you must be given restroom breaks. If you bring your products with you to work and change them often enough during those breaks so that you don't experience leakage, then it hopefully won't cause you to miss any more work, and no one has to know about it.
For more information about restroom availability and laws, you might want to contact the American Restroom Association at www.americanrestroom.org.
