Would suprapubic catheter be better for my 77 year old mother who has MS?

My mother is 77 and has had MS for 30 years. She is confined to a bed in a nursing home. She has had a catheter for 4 years. She has tremendous pain when changing the catheter and severe bleeding at times. Would it be advisable to change to a suprapubic catheter? We live in a small town. Her doctor does not know much about them. She can not travel to another town.
