Q: Male sling?

58 year old, seven years after prostectomy, otherwise healthy, not overweight.

Pad-a-day incontinence.

Due to less than satisfactory experience with several urologists/urology departments (and some other interfering events), I've been reluctant to pursue, let alone try, surgery again.

How successful is the male sling--when I checked about a year after surgery, the surgeon started off quoting about 70% success rate, but it sounded more like maybe 50-50 by the end of the conversation, and considering the original surgeon said there was only a 2% chance of incontinence in the first place (might have been different if he had read my chart first, but that didn't happen until after the surgery, if at all), I wasn't happy with the odds.  I've read there's now a newer technique, and have been trying to gather at least background information before pursuing it.

Is there someplace I can find some relatively unbiased information, i.e., not the manufacturer's web site.

You can find a lengthy discussion about the different surgical options (and non-surgical intervention) for stress urinary incontinence following a prostatectomy, by visiting our web site: http://www.nafc.org/index.php?page=male-stress-urinary-incontinence#5

The statistics we published for the sling are continually being updated by studies published in recent months that are even more positive and encouraging.  The stats we have are that 30-40% of men are completely "dry" afterwards, an additional 30-40% are improved, and the remaining third are not helped.  It is important to have the procedure done by someone with considerable experience and an individual who has moved to the newer, non-bone achored approach.  Depending on where you live, we can assist you with that search.  Call our office 1.800.252.3337.  We can also send you printed information, available as well from our web site online store.

Have you tried pelvic floor muscle exercises?  You should have been instructed to begin them prior to surgery.  We have information on that as well.  All the best,

Nancy Muller
