What good or bad experiences are to be had with mcguire urinals and condom catheters? Do they work well?

I prefer the McGuire urinal to condom catheters for a number of reasons.  The McGuire urinal works very well and is comfortable for long periods of wear.  The internal cone-shaped sheath of the urinal forms a "dam" against leakage.  You don't have to live with that yanking feeling from the condom cath because the urinal has its own suspension system.  Get the model that has a detachable sheath, however, because cleaning is much easier and the supporter portion can be put into the washing machine with other things.  If you need to wear incontinence protection all the time, be sure to purchase at least two urinals so that cleaning and drying will be routine.  I am able to wear a urinal virtually continuously.

You need to fit it properly, however, so you minimize the contract area between your penis and the urine in the collection sheath.  This will ensure a long wear period.  Use the Hollister 9805 leg bag.  It is comfortable also and you will be able to go quite a while between "pit stops."

Finally, the Mentor (now Coloplast) urinal is the most comfortable for me and the Urocare is nearly as nice.  I don't care for the Champion unit because the inner sheath is too short and it exposes too much of the sensitive skin on the penal shaft to urine, causing rash and irritation.

For details on fitting, re-post a reply to this message and I will post.

Yes I would like to know how to fit a McGuire urinal...  I don't want the risk of tearing the dam, but yet I don't want leakage either!!

its just I don't want to have to go buying a new sheath...  Yes i have the type of sheath that snaps into the garment one...

But if i tear the sheath its a hefty $25 to replace it...

Any suggestions on how to make it fit without tearing the sheath??

Fitting instructions for McGuire Urinal:

Anom200, here is the best way to get a long-term comfortable fit from your McGuire urinal.  First, do NOT try to cut the sheath because no matter how careful you are and no matter how sharp the razor blade is, you will nick the rubber and the sheath will tear, sooner than later.

So the way you get a comfortable fit without cutting the sheath is to insert your penis into the sheath so that only the head is inside the sheath and the edge of the sheath rests just behind the head.  You do not want the narrow end of the inner sheath to rest somewhere up the penile shaft, so that the sensitive skin is exposed to urine.

To do this, you will need some personal lubricant.  Put on the supporter portion of the urinal.  Smear the lubricant on the head of your penis, reverse the inner sheath about 1/3 of its length, grasp the skin on the penile shaft and pull it up, over the head of your penis (if you are circumcised.)  Insert your penis into the sheath until the skin touches the inside of the sheath and then gently pull the sheath and the skin backwards, toward your abdomen, with one hand while your guide your penis through the narrow opening of the sheath with the other hand on the outer sheath.

Make sure that the inner sheath isn't forming a large, wrinkled "collar" around your penis, but instead comes to a smooth end, just behind the head of your penis.  The lubricant should help you get a smooth fit by coaxing the sheath back and forth until it is smooth.

That's all there is to it.  If the inner sheath seems too tight (to the point that urine won't flow well) this will last for only a day or 2 as the body heat and wear time will relax the latex to the point the fit is very comfortable.

A note about underwear/briefs for McGuire urinal wearers.  The boxer briefs work best because they provide support for the outer sheath and a smooth line under your slacks.  Jockey briefs tend to let the sheath bunch up inside the leg band.  Now all you need is a connection tube and a leg bag.  I have found that the Hollister 9805 pleated leg bag with their wide leg bands is the most comfortable setup.

Good luck and let us know how this works for you.  /Jim

I have worn both the self adhesive catheters w/leg bag and the sheath urinals for a long time and find them to be comfortable and easy to wear.  I also wear diapers for a change a lot of the time.  I have had diabetes for over 35 years and can't hold the urine anymore.  This works for me!EmbarassedWink
