Q: Are Shingles and constant treatment resistant UTI's connected in any way?

My mother has Parkinson's disease (diagnosed 1997) and recently is experiencing constant and treatment resistant UTI's. What happens is: when the UTI is treated with whatever medication she is given the symptoms disappear but as soon as the medication therapy is over (the usual 10 days) the infection returns immediately. She has been on so many different types of antibiotics and sulfa drugs I could not name them all. Different doctors tell her different things so we are confused, of course. She has had UTI's in the past but nothing near what she is experiencing now (i.e. the medication would clear up the UTI completely). Additionally, she recently had a Shingles breakout and told me that the constant UTI's seemed to coincide with the Shingles. Is there any connection or is that a coincidence? ANY help anyone can provide is appreciated.

Thank you,

-Connie

I'm interested in what you have found out about this as my mother, 83 yrs old, recently contracted shingles and urinary incontinence at the same time and we are hoping that once the shingle subside the incontinence will as well.  Have you gotten any replies?

Unfortunately: No. However, my mom did go to a neurologist re. the UTI's who placed her on a low-dose antibiotic that she is to take daily. I have neurological "issues" and associated bladder problems so I was convinced that the UTI's were in some way connected with the nerve (shingles) problems. Her situation was horrible -- she'd be placed on an antibiotic therapy and as soon as she stopped the antibiotics the UTI's returned immediately. All the different doctors had differing opinions and she was on so many different antibiotics I couldn't tell you the names of all of 'em. Hopefully, this low-dose daily approach will work. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. -Connie
