Q: Can a catheter insertion damage the sphincter opening?

Yes.  There should be a tube of lubricant in the catheter kit and this should be applied just before inserting the catheter tip.  Alternatively, such lubricant can be purchased at most retail drugstores.  Never use vasoline, as the petrolatum base can contribute to the attraction of bacteria and thus a urinary tract infection.  Nancy Muller, NAFC
