Q: I had anterior repair/pubo-vaginal sling surgery 12 days ago.

The day after the surgery the catheter was removed I was unable to urinate so a went home with a catheter. After 11 day the catheter was removed again and I am still unable to urinate at all.  For the last 4 days I have been self catherizing myself. I have a doctor apointment in 4 days which if I don't start urinating by then he is going to dialate my uretha. Is this normal after the surgery? What could be the reason for not being able to urination?

While retention is a problem for a small minority of women following a sling procedure, a catheter is rarely required.  Most patients simply urinate normally, although the stream of urine may be bit slower for a few weeks post-operatively.  It is not unusual for a woman to have 100 ml of residual urine in the bladder after using the toilet, and this may trigger a greater frequency of urination during the first six weeks following surgery. Transient urinary retention (the inability to empty the bladder) may be expected for several days post-op or up to two weeks.  But anything beyond this is more likely to suggest sutures that are too tight than any problem with urethral stricture requiring dilation.  The expectations and method of post-operative bladder emptying should have been discussed with you prior to surgery.  Review any written materials you were given by your doctor prior to surgery to see if there's something you accidentally missed reading or hearing.  Discuss all of this on your post-op visit tomorrow. Then get a second opinion before you undergo any additional procedure.

I also just had the pubo-vaginal sling operation on the 27th of January, 2010.  I'm concerned though, I feel a burning sensation around the urethra and my groin is tender, but the main concern is I coughed today and some urine came out (not like the past but a bit).  I've been obeying orders, didn't bleed etc. Now I'm spotting, but think that is due to my monthly.  I'm thinking of calling my doctor tomorrow as well.  I know with him though, I'll have to wait for an apt since he's the chief urologist at the hospital.  Any suggestions?

Lisa how are you doing today after your recovery.   I had my surgery on May 3, 2010 and I'm still having major problems.
