Q: Every Day with Diapers

I'm curious as to how people deal with the stresses of fecal incontinence. In situations where I have a bm and can't change for a while, I start to feel very depressed, and very inferior. What are some coping mechanisms I can try? If any...thanks.

Hello,

It seems that everybody deals with situations in there own way. I am both bladder and bowel incontinant as a result of a motorcycle accident in 1997. In my case I was told i would never walk again, and after a long road of recovery I am able to walk, so to only have a problem with incontinence after all I went through, in the big picture it is nothing in my opinion.

Now to answer your question. The most important thing to do is ALWAYS check yourself, what I mean is that if you void with no warning or feeling, it is very easy to have a bowel movement and not know it. I take Nullo for odor issues, and in my case it helps a lot, but I stil have to always make sure I am checking myself.

Something else I use that really helps the most is to use a suppository every morning  as soon as I wake up, so by the time I am ready to leave I have already had a bowel movement. 90% of the time I do that I will not have a bowel movement during the day or at least if I do, it is very small.

Watching what you eat, and when you eat it will help a lot. The most important thing to remember is to change as soon as possible if you have a bowel movement always take the time to clean very well so your skin will stay healthy. Remember to ALWAYS shave down there so clean up is very easy.

I know from experience that you will have bowel movements when it is impossible to change right away, and try to stand as much as possible, and also remember that diapers with fecal guards do work very good, although I only use diapers with fecal guards when I sleep.

All in all when you look at the big picture, there are many other situations that could be worse, so be thankful for what you can do, and not on what you cant do!!

I'm disabled and can't change Myself. I press the nurse call and wait. Its certainly embarassing. I feel totally helpless and burdensome often. Last week I woke in the middle of the night and My bowel erupted suddenly causing a messy blowout. I was sleeping on a incontinence pad. But I was unable to reach the nurse call. I had to call out to awaken My roomate to have her call My nurse.
