Q: Bladder spasm at 3 a.m., when should I give Ditropan

My husband who is dying from Brain cancer has a catheter  and each night about 3 a.m. has bladder spasm, believing he has to urinate and can't.  He has Ditrophan 5 mg to be given twice a day.  What is best time to  give RX to prevent night time bladder spasm?

Per the drug manufacturer's guidelines, oxybutynin chloride (Ditropan, Ditropan XL) needs to be taken regularly -- 2 to 3 times a day when using Ditropan, in a once-a-day dose when using Ditropan XL (a long-acting form of the drug), or as directed by your doctor -- in order to be most effective.

Also, the dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. I suggest you talk with your husband's doctor about this, and how to best go about giving this medication to help prevent his unfortunate nightly bladder spasms.
