Study: Pepperoni Can Trigger Pelvic Pain

Researchers have found that the colon's reaction to spicy food--including pepperoni--can trigger the intense pain and urge to urinate frequently associated with "painful bladder syndrome." They say that when the colon is irritated by spicy food, colon nerves increase the frequency of pain signals sent to the spinal chord. The findings suggest the bladder pain can be treated with an anesthetic in a suppository or gel or an anesthetic patch applied to pelvic skin.
