The Sun Gets A Bad Rap: Vitamin D, My Bones and the Rest of My Body

By Toni Hurst, Health Guide Monday, September 08, 2008
For the last 30 years, we've been told over and over about the dangers of the sun. Everyone from my husband to my wonderful dermatologist tells me, "Stay out of the sun! You have red hair and freckles!"      And I've had my share of sun damage, luckily no melanomas, but close enough....

I live in Sydney Australia where Vitamin D3 supplements are readily available alone as capsules, or in combination with calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper and manganese; and in Women's Multi Vitamin Complexes in the form of Cholecalciferol.

No doubt it is in other complexes too, for example sport complexes for men and women. My Bipolar I is associated with SAD syndrome, so I'm inclined to hibernate thru winter, the more so as I get older and more arthritic (genetic). The constant rain we've had here for the past couple of years makes it worse.

Even on sunny days in Summer, I'm not an outdoors person. I'm photophobic and can't stand the heat. When I go to the beach, I seek out shade. I do love Spring and Autumn (Fall), but speaking of fall - I have had some bad luck with some falls and the resulting strains and sprains have agravated my arthritis - so I need all the help I can get from supplements. There's only so much fresh food I can eat.    Frances
