Q: Excluding menopause, what other reason would there be for a body temperature to fluctuate?

I am a 61 yr. old women that had a total hysterectomy at age 45.  I have been on estrogen ever since.  Even though I have been on estrogen my body heat changes every 4-6 hrs. more so at night like every 2 hrs.  My boyfriend and I sometimes have difficulty in being close together because when the change hits I get burning hot and sweaty which makes being close uncomfortable.  During the day these events makes beads of sweat form on the face.  Please help!

Thank you,

Heatwave

I would explore 2 different possibilities for starters, heatwave.  You may not be on the right dosage of estrogen.  Our needs can change over time, so you may need to have your dose adjusted.  Also, with women who have had hysterectomies, we often have to add in some testosterone to get hot flashes under control.  Just a low level can make a big difference.  The 2nd thing to check into is your thyroid function.  Uncontrolled heat and sweats are common side effects of a thyroid problem.  These are commonly seen in women, especially as they get older.  You will need to see your provider for lab work to determine if this is the cause of your heatwaves.

Good luck to you,

Sandy
