Q: Vaginal bleeding

Is there such a thing as vaginal wall thinning? My husband and I have intercourse that lasts only a few minutes because he has asthma. This morning we had sex and all day I have been very sore with pale red discharge. I have been using a hormone patch for several months now for HRT. A recent pap smear was normal. Could the vaginal wall be thinning and if so, why?

Yes Reba, the vaginal walls can be thinning even though you are on the patch.  As you progress in menopause and your own body's estrogen levels decline, the walls get thinner and drier.  Systemic estrogen (like the patch) is not always enough to treat the vaginal walls and prevent these things happening.  In such a case, you can easily reverse the problem by using vaginal estradiol (estrogen).  It comes in cream, tablet or ring.  All 3 are very effective.  Ask your provider for a prescription.  This is a problem that is easily solved.

Good health to you,

Sandy
