Q: Cancer Risks with Menopause

I'm 47, on low birth control still (since 20) and starting perimenopause.  Gained 15 pounds bellyfat, have hives, and experience depression.  I am concerned about going off the pill because my mother had breast and ovarian cancer.  I'm worried about this imbalance of hormones causing more problems than bellyfat and hives...i have a feeling these are the least of my worries to come.

Hi danigirl,

I would say that the best thing for you to do at this time is find a provider who will work with you in determining what your real risks are and what would be the best course of action for you to take in relation to hormones, symptoms, and prevention of cancer.  Information is the first step.  A very good book to help any woman understand the issues around this whole hormonal time of life is Christiane Northrup's

Wisdom of Menopause.  A good place to search for a provider who is well-versed in menopause is www.BHRTdoctors.com.

Best of luck to you,

Sandy
