Q: After having had HRT for menopausal anxiety I would like to stop taking it.

Hi Cry

I had been going through a lot of anxiety for one whole hear.  I realised I hadn't seen a Gynae for about 15 years.  When I saw him, he performed a D & C and said that the lining of my womb was inactive and, therefore, I was menopausal. and I had a great hormonal imbalance.  He put me on Prempak-C 1.25 mgs.  I have been taking it for almost 1 and a half years.  The first year was fine; finally, I had got my life back (the anxiety had practially disappeared).  Since, then the anxiety creeped in.  It was not as bad as before the HRT, but I was very disappointed.  I have tried to stop it and it has been a nightmare.  My 'Well Woman' GP suggested I stop it gradually taking a tablet on alternate days (by then, I had lowered the dose to 0,625 mgs) It was a nightmare!  I had lost my confidence, I was feeling low, anxious, scared, bleeding, etc.  So when I went back to see my Gnyae, he suggested I went back to the original dose, which was the 1.25 mgs.  He thought I should give it 3 more months.  If I knew the best way to stop it I would because I have other health issues.  Anyway, I don't want to bore you anymore.  My question is: In my case, what's the best way to stop it?  Thanks!

Hi Ana,

It sounds like you are getting hit hard with symptoms!  You don't state your age, but it may very well be that your body is not to the point that you are going to be able to quit completely without getting symptoms back.  That said, what I recommend for weaning off is to go very slowly.  Start by taking 1/2 tab one day and a full tab the

next, alternating for one month.  Then go to 1/2 tab everyday for a month.  Then 1/2 tab every other day for a month, then every third day.  By that time, if you are comfortable in relation to symptoms, you should be able to stop completely.

If you do find that you need to continue on hormones, I would strongly recommend that you ask you doctor for estradiol and Prometrium.  These are bioidentical, exactly like your body was producing.  If you haven't read my post on Bioidentical Hormones, you might find it helpful info to have before you talk to your doc.

Good luck to you.  Please feel free to write again if you continue to struggle,

Sandy
