Q: Hi, I'm really hoping someone can help.

I have been going through the menopause for a while now but I suffer with extremley heavy and debilitating periods.   They are irregular and just horrendous.  I have been told that having a coil fitted may help. Really don't know what to do but I can't carry on this, Does anyone have any advice?

Hi Vicki,  One of the reasons bleeding can get very heavy in menopause is low levels of progesterone.  Often taking micronized progesterone (Prometrium) can help to lighten the bleeding and even regulate the periods somewhat.  I would recommend that you see a gynecologist who will give you the medicine.  You want to avoid Provera (medroxyprogesterone) because it can have lots of side effects, including depression.  Your provider should be familiar with Prometrium and its use.  If that doesn't work, discuss the possibility and appropriateness of an uterine ablation to stop the bleeding.

Good luck with this problem and hang in there.  There are options,  Sandy
