Q: I'm 52y/o, Regular Menses, Fibroid & Enlarged Uterus- Risks?

My symptoms are minimal... frequent urination,  1 out of 5 days I have heavy bleeding, and a fuller abdominal feeling.  My main question is, What potential health risks and/or symptoms should I be aware of/look for?      Thank you for any information.

Hi Marie,  Uterine fibroids are very common and are benign tumors which often cause abnormal uterine bleeding, like the frequent and heavy bleeding you are experiencing.  Other symptoms can include painful uterine cramping, back pain, painful sexual intercourse and problems with urination or bowel movements.  Depending on how heavily you are bleeding, that in itself can be a risk factor as it can lead to anemia.  Because fibroids are estrogen dependent, they often shrink after menopause.  On the other hand, they can sometimes grow and put pressure on other organs.  It is important for you to have them evaluated.  An ultrasound can be used to measure the fibroids and your doctor will want to monitor them for growth.  Your bleeding should also be evaluated.  There are various ways to try to diminish or stop it.

Good luck to you!  Sandy
