HRT every other day

Topics:HRT every other day

The doctor put me on HRT 5 months ago because I started to have irregular periods and it made me feel depressed. She suggested that I dropped the dose to a tablet every other day and since then I haven't had a period. Now she says that I probably won't have any more. Seems a bit of a weird coincidence. I'm 45 years old. I was wondering whether I should go back on one tablet per day again and see what happens?

Hi Abigail,

I'm wondering what HRT your doctor put you on.  Most commonly it is the synthetic progestin (Provera, medroxyprogesterone) that causes depression.  So, if that's what you were on, I wouldn't go back on it.  Every other day dosing is not a great idea...it just adds to the fluctuations of your hormones and can cause or increase side effects.  And finally, it's probably coincidental that your period stopped when it did and until it's gone for at least 12 months, there's really no good way to predict that it will be the last one.  I'd recommend you ask your doctor for bioidentical progesterone (and estrogen if you're having symptoms of low estrogen).  The brand name is Prometrium.  Estrogen, best and safest when used as a transdermal, is the estradiol patch or cream.

Good luck to you,

Sandy
