Q: Is motion sickness a symptom of menopause

Is motion sickness a symptom of menopause? I am 52 and in menopause (only one light period in the lat 11 months). In the last month I experienced motion sickness while riding roller coasters and offshore fishing. Both activities I have done many many times and never have had motion sickness.

Hi jagfansrus,

I can't say that I have had patients complain of motion sickness as part of their menopause symptoms.  However, I do know that many women will describe a very transient light-headedness that comes and goes once they are in hormonal transition.  This may be similar or related to what you're describing, but I have never seen any medical literature on it and am not aware that it has been included in symptoms in any of the research on menopause.  Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Good health to you,

Sandy

Hello,

I've been wondering the same thing. I had a hysterectomy last November and every single plane ride I've had since then has ended in disaster!

I've always suffered from motion sickness, but lately, it's been much, much worse.

I am experiencing this symptom as well - it's particularly noticable during air travel, and sometimes I notice it while riding the train.  In fact, reading the morning paper on my commute to work makes me queasy these days.  I just turned 54 and was doing research to find out if motion-induced nausea could be a symptom of menopause.  Apparently it is - even if the doctors don't recognize it as such.  As if the 20 degree temperature fluctuations weren't enough!!  Good grief.
