this pain is quite severe and goes up into my neck, usually lasts about 15 minutes before it goes away

Dear Vicky, What you are describing is definitely serious and must be evaluated by a physician. It's not a stroke or you would have lasting effects, but it could well be a sign of a cardiovascular issue. Please get in to be seen as soon as possible. I hope it is something much less serious, but you won't know without a work-up.
