As women age, even before the last period, estrogen levels are dropping.  Your bladder and vagina are 2 of the areas in your body with the most estrogen receptors and both are effected by the change.  The skin of your vagina gets thinner and drier, making it more vulnerable and easier to damage by the friction of intercourse.  The remedy is estradiol...in a cream, tablet or ring form.  If this has been happening for a year, it will probably take a couple of months for healing.  The meds are prescription, so you will need to see your provider.  I would also recommend you avoid vaginal penetration for awhile and let the healing progress.
