Hi, I'm 46 have problem sleeping and also missed my menses for almost 6 weeks. After six weeks of absence my flow was heavy with cramps and pains. Please advise if this is a symptoms for perimenopause or menopause.

Thanks

Rose

Hi Rshan,

It is very common to start skipping periods by 46.  Often, when it has been longer than a month since the last period, the next bleed can be quite heavy with clots and often uncomfortable cramping.  Over the counter progesterone used the 2 weeks before your period each month can be very helpful with regulating your period and keeping the bleeding lighter.  If that is not strong enough, your doctor can prescribe progesterone capsules or cream of higher dose.

Good luck,

Sandy

Thanks for the answer. My flow is slowing down but still with cramps, backache and headaches. Feeling very week. Why is this happening. Must I consult a doctor?

I'm glad to hear the flow is slowing but, if you are feeling very weak, that can be a sign of anemia from such heavy bleeding and seeing a doctor would be wise.  This type episode happens because your hormones are out of balance, specifically the progesterone is probably too low.  A provider will be able to help you get balanced and prevent further heavy blood loss and discomfort.

Good luck,

Sandy
