Hi Dianne,  You can still get pregnant in perimenopause, but not once you are in menopause.  The problem is that it can be difficult to know for sure that you have had your last period.  Technically, menopause means that you have had no menstrual bleeding for one year, so you won't know for sure for at least a year that it was indeed your last period.  I generally recommend to my patients who do not want to get pregnant that they need to contracept for 18 months to 2 years from what they believe to be the last period just to be sure!
