Q: I am in perimenopause. I've always had low progesterone(had to take progesterone with my pregnancies).

I'm wondering how or if this could affect me in perimenopause and menopause.

Hi, Takeli,

I'm sorry for the delay in answering your question. I'm not a medical doctor, but declining progesterone is linked to the onset of menopause. I'd suggest that you talk to your doctor about this issue and see what symptoms (which could include hot flashes, migraines and malaise, among others) as you make the transition.

Take care and keep us posted.

Hi Takeli,

Perceptive question and, yes, you will probably have some effect...most likely you will note changes in your periods somewhat earlier, mood swings may be a problem and sleep disturbance would also be more likely.  These are the 3 main areas where progesterone's influence is active.  It's not that you'd have different symptoms than someone with a higher level of progesterone before perimenopause.  However, starting out low, yours doesn't have to drop as much to bring on symptoms.

Bioidentical progesterone can be very helpful in tempering those issues.

Good luck to you,
