Q: Is there anything I can do to my diet to help minimize the effects of menopause?

Is there anything I can eat to help my symptoms or should I change my diet completely as menopause sets in?

Izzy--It depends on the symptoms you want to alleviate. I've read that staying away from spicy hot food can help alleviate hot flashes, and also drinking less alcohol. (I've always found a glass of wine at dinner a nice treat--I think the experts are saying that a lot of hard liquor creates internal issues that make hot flashes worse). Certainly your personal physician can advise you on some other food suggestions--osteoporosis is a very bad side-effect of menopause so make sure you get plenty of low-fat calcium, like low-fat yogurt and cheeses, and of course milk, and some leafy green vegetables. I think there are studies that show a healthful diet coupled with an exercise regimen will help with your symptoms, I know most women agree that exercise helps get them re-focused on the good in their life, not the bad. Good luck!

I have found that cutting out sugars, salt, fried foods anything high in cholesterol also helps relieve some of the symptoms of menopause.  Caffeine is another one that will cause hot flashes more often.  I had a heart attack a year ago and I feel so much better today just by changing what I was eating and getting more exercise.

I am still struggling with quitting smoking and I've been told that will also help me to feel even better.  It seems to be the last bad habit to break after being successful with all of the others.  More fruits and veggies are crucial, lots of water, no alcohol or one drink if that is possible.  Diet will definately make a difference.  It is not a cure, but it will relieve some of the symptoms, trust me!
