Magnesium?

Tre
03/27/09

What is the best form of magnesium to take? I currently take magnesium citrate 130 mg and also get 80 mg magnesium oxide with my calcium supplement (1,200 mg calcium in divided doses). I am surgically menopausal and also take fish oil with vitamin E and a vitamin supplement with 120% of the b vitamins and use the Climara .1 estrogen patch.

Thanks,

Tre

The best absorbed form of magnesium is said to be magnesium glycinate or a chelated

form of magnesium.  These are most bioavailabe, thus best absorbed.  A minimum of 600 mg a day is recommended.  Many women find if they take most of it at night it helps their sleep since one of its actions is as a smooth muscle relaxant.

Hi -

I use Magnesium Citrate.  Magnesium Oxide is supposed to be much harder to absorb.

Mine come in powder form inside of a gel type capsule. (You can see the powder inside the clear capsule).  I did a test on one - put it in a glass of luke (body temp) water and checked on it after 20 mins to make sure that the outer capsule had dissolved.

A LOT of the compressed pill forms are so compressed and have so many binding agents in them - they will pass right through some people without ever dissolving!

One more thing to consider - Magnesium and Calcium work together in the body - one needs the other to be used properly. There is a "correct" ratio of CA to Mag- which I would advise you to research or "google"....Vitamin D is very important for calcium delivery also.

Best,

I take my calcium and magnesium about a half an hour before bed, and it really does make me sleep better!

Watch this video about menopause and menstruation, a normal, natural shedding process of the uterine lining that occurs monthly in all healthy adult women after puberty.
