The best absorbed form of magnesium is said to be magnesium glycinate or a chelated form of magnesium.  These are most bioavailabe, thus best absorbed.  A minimum of 600 mg a day is recommended.  Many women find if they take most of it at night it helps their sleep since one of its actions is as a smooth muscle relaxant.
