Q: I had an endemetrial ablation two years ago for very heavy bleeding-successful-now bleeding again.

I had an endemetrial ablation over two years ago for very heavy bleeding-doctor did a biopsy at same time and it showed simple glandular hyperplasia but no atypia. The ablation worked wonderfully for 2 years-I had very little bleeding. 5 weeks ago I started bleeding- extremly heavily some days-cramping, clotting and mildly other days, however no cessation in the bleeding-Dr put me on progesterone 10 mg 4 weeks ago and am having an ultraound done in a week. Can you give your opinion-I prefer not to have a hysterectomy.

Hi Cyndy,  Unfortunately, ablations are not necessarily successful forever, as you are now finding out.  It could simply be that the doctor who did it only ablated part of the uterus or that the tissue simply grew back and you're now shedding it.  The progesterone should help lighten the bleeding while you wait for the US, although 100mg may not be enough.  If it's not slowing, ask your provider if you can increase to 200-400mg.  Don't jump ahead and worry about a hyst yet.  There can be a number of explanations, including fibroids or polyps, that can cause bleeding and do not require surgery to correct.

Best of luck to you,

Sandy
