my appt with the migraine specialist

By mcmurraychick Friday, April 16, 2010

so i finally had my appt with the migraine specialist. and OMG it was totally different than ANY other appt i've ever had.

as i walked in with the nurse he was in the hall watching me, and observed me sitting in a chair reading for 5 minute or so before he came in the room. started with a normal chat, do i like to read? i said yes, then he looked at me and told me from what he sees this is his guess. the pain starts in the back of my head, wrapping around to the front, ending just behind my eye. sort of feels like a hot poker sticking in there.

my jaw hit the floor. turns out that since i spend so much time either on the computer, hunched over at work ( due to the counter being too high for me) or with my head bent while reading, that i'm setting off a muscle spasm in my neck that is triggering my migraines.

since i work nights i don't really sleep deep enough to allow the muscle time to relax and heal itself. so tonight i get to start flexeril. hoping that it will help. if not he will do nerve blocks the 19th of may.

it was so nice to finally have someone understand how i feel. he has been through this himself, which is what helped him decide to work only with headache patients.

he also changed some meds around, and ave me an instruction sheet that has to go with me every time i need the ER. ( which we hope will be less and less)

finally there is some light at the end of the tunnel!

nerve blocks... the day after

ialmost forgot. he also sent a letter to my job wanting me transferred to days, and is redoing my FMLA paperwork.

will do. and even better than finding him is knowing that he has lived this. he knows how it feels.

Would you be willing to let me know who and where you met with this specialist?  I am in need of finding someone and will need to travel (probably by plane) anywhere I go.  I've been meeting with my general physician for the past two years and have had no real success with many, many different neurologists.  It would be nice to try again.

i am seeing Dr Bryan Cooper at East carolina headache and spine in Greenville NC.

i'm not sure where it is but i know there is a list on here with migraine specialist from all over the country.

Thanks so much...I live in Northern MN, so I don't know if I'd make the trip, who knows....I wish you the best of luck with your new doctor.  He sounds wonderful!

he is. and the best thing i have found with him is that he understand because he has been there.

You might try calling his office to see if they can refer you to someone in your area. This worked for me from Houston to Boise. Now that's a long distance referral!

Thanks for the idea!
