Opioids for Migraines - Why Not?

By Teri Robert, Health Guide Wednesday, February 10, 2010
There are many good questions about Migraine treatments. One that comes up with some regularity is, "Why won't my doctor prescribe narcotics / opioids for my Migraines?" That's an excellent question. Nancy and I have answered it many times, but readers are understandably dissatisfied with our anwe...

Thank you for this article.  I think much of what you wrote is the reason I have not requested a rescue medication from my doctor yet.

I have to say that I am probably a little more confused now because although I have never used a rescue, it sounds like we should never use them.  I thought they would be for those times when our abortives were not working and as a last ditch effort to hopefully not end up in the ED so we could get some relief from the pain to hopefully sleep it off.

Is that what a rescue med would be for?  Or should we never use them?  I ask because I just went through a 12 day Migraine where I'm not sure if I should have tried a rescue med.  I also ask because I have recently found out that my doctor may not be prescribing any rescue meds any longer and I'm not sure how I should feel about that.  It was always nice to know that that was an option if I felt I needed them.  I go back to my doctor next month and had planned to ask her about them then, but I don't know if I really should at this point.

By the way, the link to the article does not work here.

Hi Puppet,

Thanks for letting us know about the link, I think it is fixed now.

Let me see if i can clear us any confusion for you. Opioids used for rescue purposes, when our abortives fail or we can't use them, is ok. That hasn't changed. However,  opioids are not good for Migraine prevention, becausethey don't "prevent" anything. That's where people have some questions, "why won't my doctor prescribe me narcotics for my Migraines?" Well, now we know. In the article, Teri talks with four different doctors and their view on opioids and Migraine preventive care - that's what we are talking about here, not rescue.

Does that help any?

Hi Nancy,

That helps my lately cognitively challenged mind a lot.  I kept reading the question about the doctor not prescibing narcotics for Migraines on any basis including rescue as opposed to just as a preventative.  It probably helped my confusion since I recently heard my doctor won't prescribe rescues any longer, but I will find that out from her during my next appointment and possibly have decisions to make after.

Thank you for clearing this up.

Hey again,

Docs really aren't fond of opioids at all...for rescues they will try NSAID's, or indomethcin first. On the other hand, they don't want us to be in pain either.

Teri,

Thank you so much for this wonderful article. I really appreciate the time you took in writing it but also in interviewing the physicians. It really helps to hear from those who specialize in the field what they think about it.

I am sure this article will be really helpful because I know there are many people who do not understand 'why' using opiods regularly is not good for those of us with Migraine disease.

So, thank you for tackling a topic that I'm sure is *very* touchy with some people. You rock.  I liked this article so much that I read it outloud to my DH.

Hugs,

Kelly

Kelly,

Wow. You're welcome, and thank you!

You're right. It is a VERY touchy subject with some people. I almost didn't write it, but then decided I need to give all the info I can, even if some people don't like it. It was really great of the doctors to take the time to help. We're so lucky!

Hugs right back atcha!

Teri
