Migraine Abortive Amerge Now Generic

By Teri Robert, Health Guide Wednesday, July 14, 2010
Do you take a Migraine abortive medication? If so, which one? If you take Amerge, there may be good news for you. Amerge is now available in generic form, naratriptan. You can read more about the medication in our Amerge profile. The patent on Amerge expired this month, and generics were al...

Marie,

No. Maxalt is newer than Amerge. The MLT patent doesn't expire until 2014, so it will be a few years before there's a generic for Maxalt MLT.

I've come to "fall in love" with Amerge... While it may take longer to work than a sumitriptan would, or make me more tired than frovatriptan, it's  pretty much more consistent in getting the more painful Migraines- than frova. (my 2 triptans that work well for me)

Although the co-pay is steep, I have a great pre-authorization for what we now know as "amerge."  Until I try the generic naratriptan,I'm kinda wishing that things hadn't changed. But that's selfish, I know.

Guess I'll have to wait until next month to see if the new generics are jamie-friendly. If not, (sigh) time for more paperwork...

Yay!! Finally I should be able to once again take what works for me, hopefully the generic Amerge will. My new insurance company cut my dose to 3/month. I have to assume that those making the decisions haven't lived w/migraines. I am thankful that menopause has changed the pattern and reduced the frequency of my migraines. Still, we all need appropriate meds that work and we shouldn't have to fight for it.

Is there a difference between the generic meds and name brand?  Our insurance company will not pay for any name brand medications.  None of the triptans have worked for my daughter.  But I wonder if the name brand triptans would.  We keep obtaining medications that our neurologist swears are the most potent and effective on the market, but his prescriptions are always turned into generic meds due to our insurance company.  So far, nothing really works for my daughter.  Please give me your thoughts.

To me , there seems to be no difference between Amerge and the generic naratriptan...i have only tried the generic a few times so far but it has exactly the same sucess rate as amerge..i may be imagining it but the generic seems to make me really sleepy.  i have been taking amerge or the equivalant in uk for years and years and the cost is the worse thing. does anyone know how long the generic has been available?  it is fantastic that at last it will be affordable, it is a nightmare for anyone who suffers from migraines to try and get enough medicine.  Thank God is all i can say!
