Excedrin Migraine - Recall, Scandal, Outrage, and Options

By Teri Robert, Health Guide Wednesday, July 18, 2012
On January 8, Novartis Consumer Health Inc. voluntarily recalled several products, including Excedrin Migraine, saying that the recall was "precautionary following consumer complaints of chipped and broken pills and inconsistent bottle packaging line clearance practices possibly resulting in mixed ta...

Teri mentioned that several stores carried a generic of the Excedrin Migraine.

I've seen lots of people mention that the generic doesn't work as well for them. Perhaps very true, due to the fillers/binders/fun of generics Frown

Maybe THAT particular generic didn't work for you. Like Teri said, many of the major pharmacies have their OWN generic. Thus, if one doesn't work for you, you've still got options. Perhaps another generic will work better. Doesn't hurt to try...

I've found that this even happens on non-OTC meds- sometimes things vary from one to another- especially for people as sensitive as me!  Sometimes, when the drug store gets a different generic of one of my meds, I can totally tell.

Personally, if I were using Excedrin Migraine, and couldn't find it,  should the first, or even second generic not work, I'd be tryin' different ones until I found something that worked. Maybe the third generic of the Excedrin Migraine would do the charm?

I haven't found any other generic that equals excedrins.  I have tried many different brands and none of them are as good.  Will they ever bring back excedrins?

7/19/12 5:48pm

There is no Excederine of any form in this area and many stores are even out of their generic/store brand versions.  I have been gathering it up when I see it.  Unfortunately, I rarely see it.  Luckily generic can still be purchased online.

It's all in your head.  The generics work just as well.

I usually purchase the "extra-strength" store brand versions, they are usually a little cheaper than anything marked migraine or headache.  If you look, they have exactly the same ingredients.  I usually go to Target.

Exactly.  Not getting relief from the generics is a "reverse placebo" effect.  Take the generics.  It is highly unlikely that they won't work for you.  And, if they don't, try another brand of generics.  If all Exedrin generics don't work for you, then it's not the "binder" or the "inactive ingredients" or whatever....it's your mind messing with you.  If "real" Exedrin worked for you, take the generic, forget about your headache, and it will go away.

Excedrin never worked for me. Iv'e recently found Migrelief for preventative. Migralex is abortive. I finally figured out after all of these years of trial and error that i have a magnesuim deficiency for sure. I also prefer natural vs chemical. Hope this helps.

I can understand the magnesium deficiency.  But, "natural vs. chemical"?  Everything is chemical.  The distinction is processing.  Anything that is poorly processed is going to be potentially harmful.  And, stamping "natural" on the label has nothing to do with how properly and safely the substance within the bottle was processed.  Know the source and read up on the manufacturer.

I have had migraines since I was thirteen and I am not in my fifties. While excedrin migraine did not help me, I sympathize for those who have had relief from in and are now without it. Long before such things were ever on the market, my mother who also suffered from migraines used a home remedy. A cup of hot black coffee with a couple of aspirin or Tylenol. Ibuprofen also works. While there are some who may not like coffee, anything with a little caffeine in it might work. I have also been able to stop a migraine when I feel it coming on, by take a couple of sudafed with black coffee. I know this may not help some people, but I hope it helps someone.

Caffeine effects blood vessel pressure.  Taking a "No-Doze" and an aspirin or Tylenol (or both) is essentially the same chemical formula that makes up an Excedrin.  By relieving pressure, a headache may be eliminated.  But, migraines and cluster headaches may not respond to anything having caffeine in it.  We know what happens when these headaches occur, but we don't know why they happen or why various treatments help some and not others.  The brain is still largely a mystery to us.

Check the ingredients.  Excedrin Migraine had the exact same and amount of  active ingredients as regular Excedrin.  There's a lot more to this recall than just packaging problems.

7/22/12 3:00pm
Regular excedrine was first given approval to be allowed to add migraine to their packaging. The regular and the migraine formula was always the same. However, even though generics may contain the same ingredients they may not work the same for all people. BC does tend to work as well for me although nothing works 100 percent of the time and I have to resort to abortive meds. All in your head. Lol how many times have we all heard that. Hope your find something that works.

Teri, thanks for the update on Excedrin and the viable, available options,

along with the analysis ~ the pro and the potential shortfall.

You are a true lifeline and are appreciated.
