Headache Occurring During Migraine Aura

By Teri Robert, Health Guide Wednesday, August 01, 2012
A Migraine attack can have up to four phases - prodrome, aura, headache, and postdrome. The aura is generally thought to be a separate phase that precedes the headache. During a clinical trial of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for Migraine, it was necessary to collect data that allowed rese...

That's interesting.  I am so glad there are so many studies going on.  It is not "just a headache" like so many other people seem to think.  Someone out there is taking us seriously! :)

I found it really interesting too. I know it doesn't always seem like it, but there's a pretty large group of doctors and researchers taking us seriously. With such a lack of research funding, it's really great to see them get extra research out of a clinical trial like they did here.

Great study!  Teri these results do not surprise me.  Since I have migraines with sudden onset & rapid progression (with aura), it has been frustrating hearing from one of my former headache specialists to "treat" it when the aura arrises, before the headache starts.  Headache symptoms for me do precede the aura (except for a few opthalmoplegic migraines I had long ago--lost vision thought I was having a stroke, but soon became a migraine).

Maybe one day research will look into many other body changes that signal an oncoming migraine (with or without auras) that will clue us into a mounting "attack."  Maybe we will wear devices that measure muscle tone or other changes in body function that can alert us to a pending migraine, and take action faster.

Hi,

Becoming aware of how our bodies are gearing up for a migraine is so important. You're right. Sometimes taking an abortive when the aura occurs is too late.

For me, sometimes I get extreme psychological sypmtoms; like sudden inability to cope with a stressful situation, (which could be confused with hormones) mental confusion. Physically a sudden energy spurt; tingling or numbness, sudden bowel problems (needing to go...like, now!) etc....even then, sometimes I attribute those to pre-menopause!

Best to you.....in this together...Kendra

Hi,

This is why I never play around with migraine aura. I take my abortive as soon as I know I'm getting visual distortion; rather than waiting to see if a headache results FROM the aura.

I believe this practice has been helpful in totally aborting the migraine or at the least lessened it's severity....I never leave home without Relpax. I also will insert a Phenergan during the Aura phase. Known to be anti-nausea it is also a potential abortive....who knew? (been treated in emergency room with antihistamines during a severe migraine attack)

Best to all!

Goog point, Kendra. Studies have been showing that abortives works best when taken early. I don't always get auras, but when I do, I take my abortive then too.
