American Headache and Migraine Association - Patient Organization Launches
It's a great day for all of us with Migraines, cluster headaches, and other headache disorders as it marks the launch of a new patient-focused organization, the American Headache and Migraine Association (AHMA).
The AHMA was founded to EASE the burden of Migraine and other headache disorders through Education, Awareness, Support, and Engagement.
Our mission is to help those affected by Migraine and other headache disorders find and use our voices to empower patients, family members, friends, and care partners. Through education, support, advocacy, and research we will bring hope and banish the feelings of hopelessness that too often accompany these disorders. We will work to dispel myths and misconceptions, thereby working to eliminate the stigma we face all too often and replace it with compassion and understanding.
Membership in the AHMA is open to anyone concerned about Migraine and other headache disorders and those who live with the burden of these disorders. The AHMA web site will incorporate educational content from the American Headache Society Committee for Headache Education (ACHE). Programs will include various forms of support, a private discussion forum, patient advocate mentoring, an annual conference, and other programs determined by the membership. The first annual conference is planned for November 24, 2013, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Future conferences will be held in different locations to make them more accessible to people in different parts of the United States.
The AHMA is the new patient branch of the American Headache Society, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The board of directors is comprised of five patients, with five AHS members appointed to support and assist their patient counterparts. The members of the first AHMA board of directors are:
Chair: Teri Robert Co-Chair: Paul Winner Chair Elect: Ellen Schnakenberg Co-Chair Elect: Bert Vargas Vice Chair: Bob Wold Co-Vice Chair: Rob Nicholson Treasurer: Julie Zellner McDonald Co-Treasurer: Rebecca Wells Secretary: Diana Lee Co-Secretary: Rob Cowan
Future patient members of the board of directors will be elected by the AHMA membership.
Annual dues for the AHMA are:
- $15 per year - Standard Membership
- $250 - Lifetime Membership
- $0 - Active Duty Military and Immediate Family
- $0 - Disabled Veterans and Immediate Family
- $25 - Family Membership for two or more members in the same family at the same address
I hope you'll become a member of the American Headache and Migraine Association. This is our opportunity to mold this new patient-focused and patient-managed organization, to develop the programs we patients need and want, to support each other, and much more.
