Dr. Dawn Marcus - A Migraine Patient's 30 Days of Gratitude

  • When November and Thanksgiving roll around, I often find myself especially grateful for certain people, including all of the doctors and researchers who are working to help all of us with Migraine and other headache disorders.

     

    When Migraine or headache are striking, it's so easy to get discouraged. It's easy to forget that there truly have been advances and that there are good reasons to be both thankful and hopeful. A couple of days ago, I shared that I'm very thankful for my Migraine specialist, Dr. David Watson.

     

    For day #6 in our 30 Days of Gratitude, I want to share my gratitude for Dr. Dawn Marcus. Sadly, Dr. Marcus suffered a severe and unexpected heart attack last month, and she didn't survive it. If you want to see it, you can read her obituary on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. So, it's appropriate that I share my gratitude to and for her and that we celebrate her life. It was a privilege and a joy to have gotten to know Dawn professionally and personally and to call her "friend." Dawn was a spectacular doctor and researcher. She also loved dogs and studied how they can help patients.

    An aspect of treating patients about which Dawn was especially passionate is patient education. She understood that educated patients stick with our treatment plans better and have better outcomes. She admired patients who tried to keep up with the latest research, and she did what she could to help us understand that research. Here's a video she made when so many of us were concerned about the research connecting Migraine with heart attack and stroke:

     

     

    Ellen and I both find that a gratitude journal helps us maintain our emotional equilibrium when it seems that everything in our lives is conspiring to bring us down. We also find that it helps to share with each other. That's one reason we want to share with you, our Migraine and headache family.
