Senator Clinton Asks Americans for Input on Improving Healthcare

Are you as frustrated with the health care system in the United States as I am? Would you like a chance to speak out? Here's a first for you. Senator Hillary Clinton has posted a question to Yahoo! Answers: "Based on your own family's experience, what do you think we should do to improve he...

This is great Teri... you said it all. I get so sick of my insurance company telling me how much of a certain medicine I can get per month. Though I am not a Hilary fan, I appreciate her posting this and listening. I'll surely be posting!

Thanks, Christie!

I got a letter about a "free" glucose meter from my insurance company the other day. Now, of course, they made it sound like they were doing me a favor. But, when I read it carefully, the truth was there. They've made a deal with the manufacturer of some meters so they can get lower prices on the test strips. Well, I don't want a new meter. Like the one I have. AND, if my doctor had thought I needed a new meter, she'd have said so at my last appointment.

Oops. I'm not going to get myself started again. The point is that I'm going to have to start paying more for my test strips unless I bow to them and use a meter of THEIR choosing, not mine or my doctor's. Sigh.

You have said about all that needs to be said other than cut the needless paper work. My mother is a retired RN. She started in home health when the program started in the 60's. She spent nearly 100% of her time doing useful things for patients. By the time she retired in the 90's, more than half her time was spent on useless protocals specified by the gov't and endless paperwork. She didn't have the time to even give the patients the minumum of what they really needed.

I'm not sure how to address the financial issues, but we certainly do not need to go further down hill with ClintonCare or the CanadianCare my friends up north suffer through.

Thanks again Teri,

Bob

I know this is a sizzling hot topic and I certainly do not have the answers to the problem.  I just think it  is a crime for someone like me - a regular, average United States citizen - to go bankrupt because of medical, hospital and pharmacy bills.  Surely, there's got to be a better way.  I always pay my other bills on time, but some of the providers I have gotten service from, demand so much money that they won't even take the small amount I can send them every month!  They tell me, "this is not a payment account" and then promptly tell me they are going to take legal action.  All of this, just so I can receive what I believe to be a right, as a United States citizen - decent and humane health care for all United States citizens.  I realize there are many problems with universal health care, but does anyone out there have something else to offer that doesn't cause people like me to go bankrupt?  I would really like to hear from you, because I am "this close" to filing bankruptcy over medical bills.

I appreciate hearing from all of you out there in cyberspace!

Kay,

Our system is very broken indeed. Still, after talking with forum members in Canada and England, I'm not convinced that their systems are any better than ours. What's the answer? I don't really know, but this is an important discussion, IMO. You might want to look in the forum, in the New Information folder, at the thread about Michael Moore's "Sicko." That would be a good place to continue this maybe. There's also a thread somewhere in the forum specifically about the issues with our healtcare system.

Thanks!

Thanks for such a speedy response.  I have heard that the Canadian system isn't all that great.  I just feel like there should be something out there that provides free, quality and humane health care for all United States citizens.  I would like to see a migraine speciaist but first, there are none in my area and, second, they would be pretty expensive.  I do have insurance but those 20% co-pays can really eat you up.  I am a widowed mother of one son and we barely make it with just the minimum amount of necessities.  Often, I have to forego medicl treatment because I can't afford it.  One clinic in town won't even see me because I owe them so much, and they won't accept my monthly payments because they are too little.  Sometimes, the alternative is just to live in pain and hope for the best.  Or, there is always the emergenc room, which only causes more stress and makes my migraines worse.  Then, when you finally see the doctor, he thinks you are faking it and gives you something that doesn't treat the migraine.  So, that was a few hundred bucks down the drain.

Really, I don't mean to sound so pessimistic, but I just know there is a better solution for this problem.  If I had the answer, I would be a billionnaire.

I appreciate the opportunity to vent about this, as it is one of my biggest stressors in life - worrying about how I am going to pay for all my medical bills.  I also have bipolar depression and have accumulated huge bills from occasional hospitalizations.

If you know of a person in congress to whom I can write, let me know, and I will write to them.  Is Hilary Clinton still receiving feedback?

Thank you for listening.  It is awesome to have this forum.  I will continue to read and learn and, hopefully, get to know some people via these posts.

Kay,

You're welcome. I do understand. I lived alone, without insurance, minimal income for over 10 years. Dealing with Migraines and other health issues.

Still, there's no such thing as "free" healthcare. It has to be paid for somehow. In countries with universal healthcare, their taxes are much higher than ours, and still, many of their residents pay for supplemental medical insurance.

No, the Yahoo! Answers question from Hillary was closed to answers shortly after I first wrote this SharePost.

As far as I know, at this point, the best people for you to write in Congress are the Senators and Members of the House from your state. Since there's nothing specific up right now, they tend to want to hear only from their own constituents.

Hopefully, we're going to see more conversations like this and get more and more voters to realize that we have to make those who represent us accountable.
