Antidepressants, Triptans, and Serotonin Syndrome

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health advisory (July, 2006) about potential risks of taking triptans together with SSRI and SNRI antidepressants. The advisory states, "A life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome may occur when triptans are used together with a...

Add Pristiq to the SNRI list. I went to the Cleveland Clinic Headache/Migraine Center and the doctor prescribed me Pristiq and Imitrix. Sometimes I have to take 2 Imitrix to stop a migraine. Sometimes a migraine lasts up to 3 days. Sometimes I get 3 migraines in one week. I told her all these things. She did not warn me about the possibility of seratonin toxicity. The pharmacist did not warn me about seratonin toxicity. I only learned about it from reading about the presciption information sheet they give you when you pick up your medicine after I paid for it. So, after I paid $50 for my Pristiq that I didn't even take because I was not willing to take the chance of giving myself seratonin toxicity, I was very upset with my Cleveland Clinic specialist who failed to mention this to me. I read on another sharepost that Tramadol could also cause Seratonin Toxicity when combined with triptans. Good to know. Thanks doc! My family doctor prescribed me these several years ago. It just bugs me that the doctor is supposed to help me and it seems like they are putting my life at risk without my knowledge. If I want to put my life at risk that should be my choice. Even if the chance is slim. I should know. At least I'm smart enough now to do research and read up and the meds I take before I take them.

Great information and sentiments, and yes we should all

be smart enough to do the research ourselves but so few

have time and are only looking for their symptons to disappear.

I am so blessed now to be retired because of cluster migraines

but after eleven years of taking Vicodin, Oxcycontin, Methadone,

Percocet, Amitriptyline, Depakote, Opana ER & IR, Imitrex, Trexamit,

Oxycodone by name, and so many others, I felt like the doll who

gets stuck by Voodo pins.

Then I misplaced my Methadone, not sure how but no locked

box just a travel case but only I, my wife, and our baby,
MaiLuv, a Maine Coon, live here, so it had to be me in my

delirious state, a state I was not even aware of that I was in.

But misplacing the Methadone is probably the first act I am so

grateful for in a string of long acts following.  The list is so long

now 6 months later.

I got off Methadone, cold-turkey, in May 2009, then Percocet

in June 2009.  It was hell, but the process was ridding me of

11 years of drug experimentation by Neuroligists, Plastic Surgeons,

Optometrists, you name it.  Funny how all those established

businesses must be written with CAPITAL letters, like God.

I have had 3 Uncles who were very well known doctors, and

my mother saw them often as well as numerous other doctors

for every condition you could think of without a lot of success.

But now I've learned that I inherited these cluster migraines

from my mom's dad, the only grandfather I knew.

My dad's dad, who played 1st trombone with John Philip Sousa's

band on Catalina Island and in Golden Gate Parks in California, died

when my dad was 16 so never got to meet him in person.

Now that I see serotonin syndromes, I think my mom also

suffered from migraines but back then there was not the epidemic

there is now and even less doctors who have ever been taught

about them and what they are, which is up to much debate anyway,

and I now know I have suffered serotonin syndromes more than

I care to try and recall over the 11 years I was experimneted upon

by a so-called pain management clinic.

Ah, but there's the rub, isn't there?

They MANAGED pain, symptoms, and do not search for the cause

except to have their drug representatives (salespeople--I was almost

one in 1965) who are told what the latest pill has been manufactutred

by their EMPLOYER for which condition (sympton) their latest, greatest

pill CURE?

No, they are prohibited by law never to claim a cure.  If they did,

they'd be out of busdiness because there is only one CURE!

But there are (did I fail to mention on a scale from 1 the BEST to

10 the WORST--strange, seems to me I've had cluster migraines

where I would have sworn under oath that were 12s and 13s--the

few migraines I now have range around a 2) steps you can take

on your own.

The problem with sharing what works for me is that others might

think it will work for them; at least, it's worth a try, "Right?"

Fallacy.  It's not.  You'll just be doing your own experimentation

on what works for you.

But that's just where you and I have come together because WE

now are in charge of the experimentation by first researching

every Prescribed drug, their KNOWN inetractions (how could anyone

have known what my taking Vicodin, Oxycontin--which doctors now

say is practically IMMORRAL--along with Vitamin E, Amitriptyline, baby

Aspirin, multi-vitamin pills, what have you, KNOW how all those

chemicals will react in my testtube {stomach}).

Impossible when we all self-medicate to some degree even if

its just the different foods we eat and drinks we drink.

I do have a suggestion, however, based on a study in Australia in

2008, I believe, if memory serves me right and you know about

that too don't you, where they found that Vitamin B6, B12, and

Niacin, all found inB-Complex LIQUID from $120 a bottle to less

than $10 for 59 litres taking 1 litre (I take 3 or 4) per day, so

one day shy of 2 months worth if you follow their instruction.

I prefer my own, but I did try it their way.  It's so cheap, tastes

great, and lessens my cluster migraines by frequency and intensity

as I've noted before with the mention of my migraines only being

a rating of 2, but failed to mention that I might have 2 to 3 of

those per week.

I have since found a Migraine Clinic in Southern California which

apparetnly gives to their cluster migraine patients herbs, smoked

or ingested, and one of the herbs is marijuana which has been used

to treat headaches even by our ancestors, the native tribes of

North America.

They may not be your blood relative unless you take the history

back as far as you can go but we have inherited their spirit

which still watches over us as well as any supreme being you

exalt.

Chief Seattle warned us to watch our resources especially water;

have we taken his advice?

Our entire system is dis-eased that goverment OFFICIALS, not

the PEOPLE, want US to fix, as good as saying, "They've given

UP!"

And it's about time.

If your state does not have medicinal marijuana laws, and you

think that smoking, which is the least favored choice, or ingesting

THC for not getting high but making you feel better than you have

in years and helping reduce the severity and frequency of the

migraines you suffer with ESPECIALLY if you experience NAUSEA

during, before, after a migraine, then you need to research this

competley.

It has saved my 15 year marriage.  My wife and I took a four day

trip to Vancouver BC from Oregon to see and hear David Foster

and Friends Tour in his native environment near Victoria BC where

my mum was born and especially Charise, the 17 year young

singing sensation from the Philippine Islands and had the absolutely

best trip of our marriage.

Daily LIFE continues to grow brighter and brighter and I can

now even eat DARK Chocolate, drink WHITE Mocha cups of

decafe, get up much earlier than before, like by 5 hours,

go to bed around 8:30 having taken just 1 small toke in

the morning, sometimes another late afternoon, but none

before bed.

Soon I will be getting a legalized grower to suplly me with

the essentials to make my own BROWNIES, and it's all

LEGAL.

In fact, it is being considered to treat Post Traumatic

Syndrome that are young boys and girls, some mothers

and fathers themselves, are returning with from the most

expensive wars ever in our hsitory, IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN.

And now Government Officials, supposedly OUR representatives

who are embroiled in a financial tug-awars with each other

for OUR taxes to see how much they can get back to their constituents

in their State to keep gthemselves getting ELECTED.

It's ALL tied in together as are we under the auspicous of

Migraine Treatment blogs and newsletters.

Here in Oregon, pharmaceutical companies are using non-profits--

this may be one or more of each--to experiment with out teens

who are suffering from a dis-ease that is spreading faster than

the HN1 virus which our government officials cannot regulate

efficiently enough to protect ALL of US in time to thwart off

the growing amount of deaths especially with children, right

here in the greatest Republic (not Republican) representational

governement known to man that has it's basis on a native

North American tribe's policies though I'm sure they were not

called that by them.

WE must take responsiblity for this just as WE complain that

our elected represntatives are not doing their job.  It's because

WE have allowed them to work US so hard, so long to pay their

salaries, expenses, especially world travel, life-time pensions for

more than most of US can even imagine much less make,

and the BEST HEALTH CARE AVAILABLE which, however, is

of their making, and CAN and WILL be IMPROVED as long as

WE TAKE THE TIME, NO, MAKE THE TIME  and TAKE THE TIME

to FLOOD those reprsentatives with emails about what WE

want just like they sent US during their ELECTIONS.

WE must NOT let them escape from the same Health Care

they pass for US!

Just like WE are taking, making the time to research our own

solutions to the pain WE feel and have to deal with many times

daily, weekly, monthly, year in and year out for far too many

years, WE must MAKE and TAKE the TIME with a little EFFORT

to let our representatives HEAR from US.

There is NO MORE CRUCIAL TIME in your LIFE than this.
