Yes, Midrin Is Still Being Made for Migraine and Tension-Type Headache!

By Teri Robert, Health Guide Sunday, August 17, 2008
For over a year now, people have been asking, "What happened to Midrin?"   Last summer, Midrin was very hard to come by. There had been several acetaminophen, isometheptene and dichloralphenazone  compounds being made, but most of them were discontinued. The manufacturers of those medi...

Dear Teri:

Great research--and empowerment for patients frustrated at the pharmacy who have depended in the past on Epidrine and Midrin.

Maybe the patients can mention to their physicians (who have probably stopped recommending these drugs, also thinking they were not available due to patient feedback) that the drugs are still available, but just not always "stocked."  It would be sad to see a treatment option prescribed less frequently due to misperception.

Hopefully your investigation (and phone calls) will result in the patients finally being able to obtain medications that were "tried and true" for them.  Otherwise, the search for new options (as you know all too well) can be frustrating/depressing, time-consuming, painful, expensive, and in some cases dangerous (allergy, side effects).

I use Midrin as my only abortive and therefore I must have it. Last year when Midrin was hard to come by I was driving many miles to get it from other phrmacies or taking partial prescription refils.

Now the last few times I go to get my Midrin it is generic and there are two or three formulations made by two or three other companies from what I understand. They actually ask me if I prefer one over the other or if I would like the name brand? So I get to pick.. I am trying each one to see if they work the same.

Hi Teri,

My Wife suffers from migraines and just discovered Midrin, and was getting EXCELLENT relief from it.  However, it seems that Midrin (et al) are once again being "discontinued"!  She & I have heard many stories as to the reasons ... such as the FDA had never approved Midrin (e.g. "as indicated for the treatment of") for migraines and/or tension headaches, it was somehow 'grandfathered in'.  Now the FDA is requiring the makers Midrin to formally apply to have Midrin approved for said headaches.  The makers of Midrin apparently have no interest in doing so as they produce other, much MORE EXPENSIVE medications for said headaches.

HELP!!!

What can the migraine suffering public (and their spouses!!!) do to get the FDA and/or the manufacturer to ACTUALLY consider OUR well-being instead of just their bottom line and/or political KICKBACKS ?

Runmors abound, but Caraco's decision to discontinue Midrin had nothing to do with FDA approval or paying more attention to more expensive drugs. It had to do with generics being available. Many, many brand name medications are discontinued once generic versions are available, and other companies have been making their brand or non-branded generics of Midrin for years now.

Check on the generic isometheptene mucate/dichloralphenazone/and acetaminophen. Some people have reported that their pharmacies said they couldn't get it, but when I checked with my mail-order pharmacy and three local pharmacies about a week ago, they all had it.

Teri

PS: This is NOT my most recent post on Midrin. I've covered this since we first started seeing supply problems with it in 2007. My most recent post is Midrin for Migraine and Tension-Type Headache - Definitely Discontinued.
