Migraines, Cardiovascular Issues, and Triptans

There are seven medications in the triptan family-- Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, Amerge, Relpax, Axert, and Frova -- as well as Treximet, which is a combination of Imitrex and Naproxen Sodium. Each of the triptans binds to different combinations of serotonin receptors, which is why our bodies ma...

Thanks Teri for that video.  It is reassuring to hear that from others and it is what my own MD has told me.  My brother passed away from a sudden MI at the age of 47 and as I get older I continually bring my family history up to my doctor as I continue to use triptans.  Thanks again!

Thanks for the information on that. I've never had the triptans due to the cardiovascular disease that runs through my family on both sides & I have had a heart arrhythmia since my early 20's and I'm 45. I've been on corgard and Verapamil for years (heart). It doesn't take much to set it off (atrial fibrillation) & I've had my heart race over 200 BPM. Not much fun when you can literally see your heart pounding through your shirt. I would be scared to death to take any of the triptans. My neurologist even agreed and decided to put me on Toradol & bupap. My migraines are usually 1-3 a month but the severity of them are off the charts. I've been using this regeimen since 2001 along with the oxgen for 15 mins at the onset and it has actually helped. I still log every migraine, time, and what I took to try to abort it. When the bupap is used infrequently it's a very good drug for abortion (for me). The thing is, most people who have very frequent migraines probably wouldn't benefit from it due to intolerence and it can be habit forming if used more than 2 times a week. The IMITREX commercials scare the heebeejeebees out of me with all those side effects! May cause heart attack, even in those with no prior history of cardiovascular disease. Eeek!

I'm glad it's working for everyone taking it & I know a lot of people that it actually works very well on. Thanks for all the migraine information Teri. I've been following you on mymigraineconnection.com, facebook and the internet ever since reading your book. Thanks again! :-)

Despite the prominent history of cardiovascular disease and hypertension on both sides of my family tree, I do overdose myself with triptans some months.  I've known about the contraindication from day one, but never really cared because I thought it was worth the risk.  Although I try to limit my consumption, there is no way I'm giving these babies up if I have a life because of them.  But this is a great snippit that shows I need not worry my migrainy head off about taking them.  Also shows I need to keep trying to live healthy (not always easy!) so as not to gain more risk than family history so I can keep taking them. Thanks Terri!

Frova sent me to the ER with  chest pain and heart arritmia the firts and only time I try it, Zomig worked well for two month, I take it 4 to 5 times a week, my doctor was scared it was too much for my age and medical histoy. I started with Topomax as preventive medication, and reduce Zomig to 3 times a week, but then Zomig stop working, so my doctor changed to Imitrex under the tonge pills. When the pills started not working so well, he changed to nasal spray, and then to Imitrex injection. One day I have chest pain and childs and the total realization I was going to die.It was terrifing. I was back to the ER with my firts panic attact bring on by Imitrex. It was very humiliating. Like it was not enoutgh to be treated like a "junkie" when you go to the ER for just a "headache" looking for some "drugs" now I was also a "head case" .Like I was faking or something. The worst part was that I had to stop Imitrex because it was starting to not work that well and the side effects were horrible. And I try other triptrans and either they did not worked like Amerge, or worked for just a little while or they gave me horrible side effects.

I am happy the triptans are wonderful, safe medications for some people but the parmaceutical companies  did not write the side effects out of thin air, this medications do affect some people in different ways. Ther is not cure, so far, for Migraines, and we are talking about medications that are aim for some of the symtoms.
