Frustration with diagnosis

By jeneth03 Wednesday, August 22, 2007
I was recently hospitalized with stroke-like symptoms.  I am 31 and thankfully, they found no evidence of a stroke.  By day 2 though, the doctors seemed to have written me off.  I was (and still am) experiencing numbness and tingling on my left arm and leg.  I also have some muscle weakness.   I have a history of migraines and tension headaches.  But it seems that the doctors in the hospital became disinterested in me once all of the normal physical tests came back fine.  In fact the day I insisted I be checked out they sent a psychologist into my room to see if maybe I wasn't imagining my symptoms!  I had a splitting headache every day I was in there.  When the neurologist discharged me he claimed he didn't know I was having headaches and prescribed me migraine meds.  The only thing that kept me from losing my mind was the fact that a great friend of mine is a a doctor (unfortunately 2000 miles away) and had told me that he thought it was a complex migraine once my mri came back negative.  I just want to say thay doctors need to get a grip on their bedside manner, and maybe spend more than 30 seconds a day with patients.  It was scary when all those tests came back negative and I needed a doctor who was going to listen and communicate with me.  Anyone have this problem.

Hi

I'm bim, Im 29 and have already had a TIA and also a stroke. The TIA, I was sent home right away after the tests and some pain meds. With the stroke, they told me there was nothing they could do, so i should clear a bed for someone who needs it! I contested that by phone and demanded a hospitalization. They kept me in for 2 days. More tests showed it was a burst vessel, so they kept their eyes on it during the stay to see that it didnt happen again. I was unbelievably frustrated by their "nuttin we can do" attitude and their " boy, you sure have weird migraines" *professional huh?*

So I know what your going through. I offer up all of my hugs and empathy...

love

bim

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection!

I'm so sorry you had this experience. It's pathetic that you didn't get better care and care with compassion. Furious

You really need to see a doctor who can give you a firm diagnosis. "Complex" Migraine is not a type of Migraine, but a descriptive term. True motor weakness is a symptom of hemiplegic Migraine, which can mean different treatment than other forms of Migraine. If your doctor can't help, try a neurologist or see if you can get to an actual Migraine specialist.

I hope you get some answers and help soon.
