TMJ and migrains

By Elk Mom Thursday, January 10, 2008
Does anyone suffer with tmj and also migraine headaches.  I wake up at night with my migraines and so am unable to take meds at "onset" of headache.

I don't have TMJ, but I clench my teeth at night. For years, I've been wearing a nightguard. My dentist takes an impression and makes it for me. It fits over my bottom teeth and is very comfortable. It wears out after about a year, and I have to get it replaced.

The night guard has reduced the pain I felt in my temples.

Sometimes, I wake up at 5am with a #7 (out of 10). I take my Imitrex, with another dose 2 hours later. The second dose usually brings it down to a tolerable 4 or 5. Like you, I can't take my meds early with these attacks.

Actually, since I don't have aura and have daily head pain, it's hard to determine whether my pain is *just* a daily headache or a migraine developing, and it's hard to catch a migraine attack early.

Do you snore a lot? Sometimes morning migraine attacks are caused by a sleep disorder. You might ask your doctor about whether you need a sleep study. My DH doesn't have migraines, but he had no energy and lots of physical symptoms. His sleep study showed that he was having 70 interruptions an hour. More than once a minute. His CPAP changed his life. He even takes it to fishing camp.

Like Gretchen I don't have TMJ, but I do clench my jaw.  Wearing the night guard helps alot.  My dentist also had me go to the chiropracter to have my jaw adjusted.  While I was a bit skeptical, it helped alot with the pain and the clenching.  Who knew.

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

TMJ can be a Migraine trigger along with a host of other things. We have a lot of information on Migraine triggers you can read HERE.

Keeping a Migraine diary may help you identify if there are any other things triggering your Migraine attacks. You can find the Migraine diary on the same page.

If you are getting more than 3-4 Migraines in a month, it may be time for preventive medication and an evaluation by a Migraine specialist. Our patient recommended list is HERE.

I don't suffer from the combo, but it would make sense if you have TMJ that it could trigger migraines. Is your TMJ being treated right now? If that is the cause, focusing on that might help stop the migs.

Yes, I wear a splint on my lower teeth 24/7.  I think in the beginning the treatment helped but as time goes on I don't think it is helping as much.  Same as before.  I have switched dentist thinking that a different approach may help.  But unfortunately no.
