triptans

By cinteach Tuesday, January 15, 2008
I am the parent of a 14 year old girl who has had a migraine headache for 16 months.  She sees a pediatric neurologist at Boston CHildren's who specializes in headaches.  She has tried the following meds: propranolol, cypolheptadine, neurontin, amatriptaline, zonicimyde, topomax and now depokote.  She has also tried triptans, but they didn't work.  Why didn't they work?

I am sorry that your daughter has to suffer through migraines. I know that it is hard for you also. With her age in mind I was wondering if they may be hormone related? If they are then many women have found that birthcontrol pills to help. I also understand how frustrating it can be to try med after med. I have tried so mant different combinations of preventive meds that I have lost count. I have also tried every triptan out there. The best we have been able to do is decrease the intensity and duration of most of my migraines.

Don't give up! The next round just might be the one.

Also have you been able to identify any other foods, lighting or smells that may be triggers?

Good luck hun! My prayers are with you both.

I know how your daughter feels. I have tried every one of those medicines and I have chronic migraines and does she have Chronic Migraines? I feel for her. I wish her all the luck in the world to find a cure.

Hello,

After reading your comment I had to email and find out about your daughter. Has your daughter had one constant migraine or does she have periods of time without a migraine? Has she found any medication to relieve the pain? I have had one chronic migraine for 9 months now. I've been to doctors, specialists, etc. and no one seems to help. If you have any suggestions from your own experience I'm desperate to hear them. I do hope your daughter has found some relief.

Thank you.

Hi Kelly,

I am sorry you have constant pain.  Our story...My daughter Breezy has not had a day of relief since this started in Sept. of '06.  But... she has days that are much better than other days.  Some days even in the summer she feels too sick to do anything - like go to the fireworks with friends.  School was much harder because she had to focus on taking notes and on work presented.  A major problem with glare and reading complicate school- so summer is better in general.  She is seeing a new neurologist out of CHildren's Hospital headache clinic and the focus is now for her on dealing with chronic pain and living through it.  The doctor wants her in school all the time- or missing very little.  Breezy probably missed a day every other week this spring, but went sick many more days and just copied notes.  I don't know how you cope with this with a job!  The neurologist is convinced this migraine will go away some day and says she sees others with the same condition.  I plan to follow up with another specialist in my area soon just for a different opinion.  I like this doctor's philosophy because it is hard going from one medicine trial to another.  It's disheartning.

cindy

PS.  Best of luck on your way to pain free days.

Your poor daughter. I can't imagine. I'm a grad student and have taken time off to figure this all out. If you have not already looked into it, food allergies might be a problem. Also, have your daughter's cortisol levels checked. It could be a problem with her adrenal glands. Most doctors will not check these two theories, but many studies show a significant link to migraines. Anything is worth checking into.

All the best,

Kelly
