Aura Always :o(

By deanz Tuesday, February 07, 2012

I had 2 migraines about 5 months ago, so bad I went to the emergency room. Had MRI and other tests taken and they said I had a severe migrane. Went to other docs, exams, more exrays etc. I haven't had a migrain in 5 months but the aura has not left. 24 hours a day. Can't drive, on a leave from work, and can barely read. Words just pop out and go away. Been to many 'specialists' tried many meds and...NOTHING seems to help.

Hello, and welcome to HealthCentral's Migraine Community!

Oh boy, that has got to bet old really quickly, having a constant aura. What kind of aura are you seeing? Is it all day, all the time? Sorry for all the questions, if I have more information I may be able to point you in the right direction.

I'm sure you know there are a number of neurological symptoms that accompany Migraine. Symptoms of the aura phase can include flickering lights, wavy lines and other visual issues, in addition to other symptoms. Take a look at Migraine with Aura - The Basics for more information.

I know you said your tests came back ok, but it is really important to make sure nothing else is going on that would cause constant aura. If your doctor isn't able to help you, or isn't listening, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Now here's the thing -neurologists may be fine doctors, but have a hard time being experts in one area. This is because they treat so many conditions like MS, epilepsy and stroke. A Migraine specialist is just that, an expert who treats one condition - ours - Migraines and headache disorders. When you get a chance, take a look at article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Thanks Nancy, I do have the aura constantly, even when I lay down and close my eyes, but it isn't as bad. I see; bright spots, the wavy lines you discribed, when trying to read, words just disappear, and I can't compose my thoughts or memory for more than a hlf an hour. I don't have the migrains, if one starts, I do have the typical Rx that is used, but very seldom do I need it. But............for 6 months now, the Aura is always there.
