Fine tuning my Migraine preventive

By Nancy Harris Bonk, Health Guide Wednesday, February 27, 2008
I've been having a hard time with chronic pain and Migraines since the middle of January. Twice in the last four weeks, I have had IV infusion treatments in my doctor's office. The first treatment was not sucessful; however, the second time, my pain was significantly reduced. Since I am ...

I hope this helps to make things more comfortable for you, and- dare I say it- the magic combo that makes the migraine monster have to release its grip on you and go cower in the corner.

Hi Nancy,

I know I sound like a broken record, but I am having some great success with Lyrica as a migraine preventative. I first learned about it when I read that the FDA had approved it for use for Fibromyalgia - another pain related disease.

My doctor says this is a second generation medication and has a lot less side effects. So far I have found this to be true. The one thing it does is intensify the effects of other medications. For example if I take two Tylenol 3s I get really tired (more than in the past) and have to sleep to wear off the effects.

Good luck. I can sympathize about how difficult it is to live with pain. I have been struggling as for a long time.

Not yet, happyarch. Thanks for your input. I will put it in my "med" file!

Dear Nancy:

It is great your MD is working with you to try different meds, and I hope the Zonegran improves your migraines.  I know we are all different, but I had gone through about 30 meds or combinations of preventatives, including several antiseizure drugs and Lyrica.  For me, an older antiseizure Depakote has helped the most with my migraines.  I don't know about it's profile with regard to side effects on mood, but at least it's another to consider if you don't get results with Zonegran (maybe you have already tried it).  You are still in my prayers and I hope you feel much better in the days ahead.

Hey Clemmie,

Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts. How are you doing? Do you still take depakote? Boy, that one did a number on me years ago.......

Anyhoo. Have a good day.

Dear Nancy - I am sorry that you are having such a hard time lately.  We all share these I think very active times and then pauses or ups and downs with chronic migraine or daily headache ( I hope my terms are right). I just wanted to comment on one thing and tell you how darn lucky you are that you have doctors that will perform infusions.  Doctors here in Arizona and specifically neurologists do not perform in-office infusions.  My last infusions were in July 07 and I had to go to a hospital. Prior to that they had to be done in the ER. I can't seem to budge my neuro on this - whether he has liability issues or not adequate nursing staff - I can't get out of hospital infusions.  I wish I could!  Good luck fighting your current spike in your migraine disease and I am sending good thoughts your way!

Thanks, Ian.  I am lucky my neuro's office is very cooperative, I just wish my head was!

Hope you are hanging in there.

Dear Nancy - I so wanted that note to come off in the right way and hope you weren't offended by it. It sounded like I was so envious of your ability to have infusions at your neuro's office and I should have made it clear that I was happy that you can do that! Big SmileThis would have been a good week for me to experience that - I had a tough, intense 4 day migraine that was not responding to medication. Last night I was considering the ER. But I had to go back up on my daily pain regimen which I had been so proud of cutting back on. Sigh. So for now it is better.  It is a subtle rise but amazing in the comfort level it returned. It is better than reaching for rescue meds all the time especially since my shedule is so busy. I hope sincerely that your migraine is improving or that you have found something to break the current cycle.  I wish you a blessed Easter -

All the best with warmth and healing thoughts -

Ian

What kind of IV infusion treatments do you receive?  Just wondering what they gave you.

Hi Sherry,

The infusions I get in the doctors office consist of fluids, and magnesium sulfate. They also give me a shot of diluadid and vistrol.

For more information here is a link for you  IV Treatment of Refractory Migraines.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information.

I was on Lyrica but it is associated with weight gain and I have weight issues so we went off that and on to Zonegran which actually is associated with wt. loss.  I had good results with my short time on Lyrica and so far so good with the Z.  Hope the Z helps you and keeps them at bay.

Every doctor here outright refuses to do IV's .They jnow me and my constant pain.Maybe it's a Florida law? What stat are you in? Only ER's and that takes 5 hours at a time and hundreds of dollars
