My what large Ventricles you have

By Sayntcin Friday, March 13, 2009

Hello there, my name is Brandi. I've been being treated for migraines for oh I dunno about 5 years or so now... This summer everything came to a peak. I had one for 3 weeks straight ended up getting sick at work having insane disorientation and my arms went numb.... Needless to say my mom decided it was time to look a little further into it. So I asked the family doctor to do a ct scan after explaining what had been happening. That ended up showing enlarged ventricles. I was also put on Topiramate to help prevent and fluvoxamine since my moods were out of wack.  I ended up with a 2 month leave from work to adjust to the meds but they still made me sleepy in the morning... now they dont so much... In february I had an MRI done and it was confirmed I have enlarged ventricles  from too much fluid on my brain? so there may be a blockage and now I am waiting for an appointment with a neurosurgeon...I'm 23 and I take naps after working 4 hours it really sucks, I just want to have a normal life...

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

I'm glad you've found our site, I hope we can give you some information to help you. Have you had a spinal tap lately? Enlarged ventricles, CSF and Migraine lead me to the Hydrocephalus Association Website. Now, I'm not saying you have this, it is just for your own information, ok? I'm not a medical professional.

A condition called Pseudotumor Cerebri (PTC) or most recently called Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) happens when too  much CSF (as you mentioned in your post) is produced  or not properly absorbed in our bodies. We have information on that HERE.  Another condition called Chiari Malformation that may have some implications for you. Information on this condition is located HERE.

Thank you for creating a SharePost. SharePosts are a form of blogging, and there are many things you can do with them. You can share an experience, suggest something that's helped you, use SharePosts as a Migraine and headache journal, and many other things.

Finally got to do a bit of reading on those articles. No I haven't had a spinal tap.. first one IIH? has alot of symptoms I can relate with... the Chiari malformation, pardon my non technical terms but is that sac which they speak located around back of neck? I know the doctor and teck mentioned they had thought that a membrane may have gotten down in to a cavity ... I know I'm not much help but I guess they ruled that out....  thanks  so much for the help

Ummm, I think the membrane your doctors and tech may have been speaking about could be cerebellar tonsils. In any case, it really needs further exploration because sac, membranes or what have you, shouldn't be in any other cavities Surprised then where they are supposed to be! Here is a site with more information. I'm not suggesting you have this condition, I am not a medical professional, just giving you information to discuss with your doctor.

Are there particular times of the day when your migraines are worse?  Like when you wake up in the morning or after your nap?

No not after sleeping. Often times they get progressivley worse as day goes on. Especially at my work place because I find scents make it worse.

Next time you're at work you might want to pay attention to your teeth.  Yes, that's right I said "teeth."  The reason I bring this up is because many people grind and clench their teeth during the day and/or night.  Though some times this type of activity only causes mild headaches and jaw soreness, it can get to the point where it triggers a migraine.  If you think this is mildly plausable and worth looking into you can check out www.nti-tss.com.  Hopefully the NTI will help you like it helped my wife.

Yes I clench my teeth not as much any more because I'm more aware of it now. A few years ago the dentist wanted me to get a night guard and once I woke myself up due to clenching, but as of late no jaw soreness not for a couple years, I don't wake up grinding like I used to and recent dental checkups have not had mention of it. Although I have quite a few cavities lol. Why is that? I am very paranoid about taking care of my teeth but I end up with the worst ones lol... anyway thank you :)

I am so glad I found this post. I am experiencing exactly the same problems as you describe and it is driving me mad- I am so miserable as I have numb arms and feel exhausted all the time. I recently had an MRI scan and showed enlarged ventricles but the neurologist does not think this is significant and hasn't said what is goign to happen next. I am at the end of my tether- I work as a teacher and feel constantly exhausted and my mind is all over the place. My workplace are basically threatening me with the sack because I can't work at the moment for all of these reasons. I would love an update on how you are doing now and what has happened since MArch.

Hope all is well.

Well it's been a few years and that summer was bad. Topiramate and fluvoxamine didn't really work just kind of took the edge off the migraines enough to function. After the follow up MRI and alot of talk about a LP and shunt etc none of those things happened. They said my two MRI's were the same and had put me on venlafaxine.  Well it worked, and because it did they didnt want to mess with a good thing and so it was decided I should just stay on it but should they get bad again I was to call my neurologist directly.  I have only had a handful of migraines in the past year and can pretty much function normally now.  I still get pins and needles in my hands legs and feet. So they sent me for an MRI on my back to seeif perhaps I had a pinched nerve but found none I do however have mild to moderate deterioration of the "flanges" on my spine which I guess indicates arthritis. So I have to have some bloodwork done for that.  But they still can't explain the pins and needles.  I had to stop the venlafaxine last year because I didn;t have insurance coverage for it and couldn't afford it.  I then started taking it again when I could but it has some side effects such as diareah sorry TMI. But again I am off it because I am sick of the side effects everyday no matter how long I take it for.  That being said I still haven't really had a migraine in awhile (a month or so)  but moods are whacked and I do wake up with a weird pain in my neck every morning and a borderline migraine that clears up after a couple hours and some ibuprofen.  I have tried every pillow in the book and just bought a new bed last summer. Gonna stay the course and try to do without meds for now as hubby and I are thinking we wanna try for a baby soon. Wish me luck and I hope everyone is doing well.
